POLE DANCE HISTORY
The history of pole dancing can be tracked over 2000 years back to an Indian sport called Mallakhamb. In China the sport also has very old roots, with their Chinese Pole acrobatics. This is a very antique form of male gymnastics. You can also se a lot of poles being used in traveling circus’ and only very recently; in the so called “Gentleman’s Clubs”.
POLE FITNESS TODAY
Pole fitness today is a hybrid of athletic, theatrical and gymnastical sport, as well as sensual dance and circus performing. There are pole art and fitness federations all over the world working on giving this sport the recognition it deserves. The International Pole Federation, the Pole Fitness Association, the US Pole Dance Federation, the American Pole Fitness Association, and the International Pole Sports Federation are unique organisations, governed by the leaders in the pole industry, for the benefit of pole community worldwide. The leading pole organisations are even petitioning to have Pole Fitness in the Olympics!
Championships and the skill level of competitors has increased dramatically. The first United States Pole Dancing Championship was held on the East Coast in 2009. Today there are national and international championships in every continent.
Pole Classes provide a unique workout for women of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels. You can get fit, have fun, and feel fabulous!
- Exotic dance | this is what most people think of when they think of pole dancing. The women involved in this category are more involved in the ‘entertainment’ side of pole and not necessarily trained.
- Pole Fitness | this is the category that most women are involved in. Pole is used as a way to get fit and feel good. Classes are taken in a private studio or gym and the instructors are highly skilled and trained.
- Pole Sport | this is the competitive side of pole. The women and men involved in this category compete around the world and are involved with the Olympic pursuit. They display incredible amounts of athleticism, strength, flexibility, and control in their routines.
